Raising children in today’s world presents various challenges, from family opinions to online scrutiny of parenting methods. Jordan Driskell, a 31-year-old father of quintuplets, faced such challenges when he decided to use child-sized leashes to manage his energetic five-year-old quintuplets in public.
Caring for five children of the same age can be overwhelming, especially when they are curious and eager to explore. Driskell, seeking a creative solution, opted for child leashes to keep his quintuplets safe during outings. Previously using a 6-seat stroller, he found it inconvenient and opted for leashes, allowing the children to explore while maintaining control and visibility.
However, when Driskell shared a video of their trip to the aquarium, the family faced criticism online. Some argued that children shouldn’t be leashed as they are not animals, while others suggested better training or parenting skills. Parenting expert Dr. Deborah Gilboa disagreed, emphasizing that leashes are a useful tool for controlling young or neuro-diverse children in public.
Dr. Gilboa highlighted that leashes are beneficial for neurotypical children, especially in situations where staying at home is not an alternative. She emphasized that the use of leashes does not make children feel like animals and can provide a practical solution for parents. While she acknowledged that by ages eight or nine, children should develop listening skills, she defended the freedom of parents to choose suitable methods for their unique situations.
The discussion around children on leashes in public reflects the diverse opinions on parenting styles. Ultimately, parents should have the autonomy to choose methods that work for their family without facing unnecessary judgment from society.
