Chapter 14: The Officer and the Survey
Preston smiled when he saw the officer.
It was the smile of a man who believed authority always arrived on his side.
Officer Daniels stepped out, adjusted his belt, and looked at the gate.
“Afternoon,” he said. “Who owns this property?”
“I do,” I said.
Preston cut in immediately.
“He’s blocking access to our neighborhood.”
I handed Daniels the survey, the attorney notice, and the county parcel map.
He read slowly.
Preston kept talking.
Daniels raised one hand without looking up.
Preston stopped.
After a minute, the officer looked at me.
“Emergency access?”
“Coordinated through my attorney and county dispatch,” I said. “They have the lock code.”
Daniels nodded.
Then he looked at Preston.
“This appears to be a civil property matter.”
Preston blinked.
“Civil?”
“Yes, sir.”
