I didn’t expect to meet my life partner on a flight. It started with a crumpled note containing $100 and ended in a beautiful, lasting marriage!
I didn’t know what to expect on that flight. It was simply another visit to my grandparents, one of many over the years. My regular pattern was to board the plane, put my carry-on away, and read or check email for a few hours. This time, something fantastic transformed my life forever!
As I boarded the plane, placed my carry-on in the overhead bin, and took my seat, I observed something intriguing. A ten- or eleven-year-old youngster sat next to me. I thought one of his parents was in the restroom.
But as the plane took off, I saw he was alone. Seeing him fidget and frantically scan the cabin, I could tell he was uncomfortable and unfamiliar with this.
I kept to myself because he swiftly glanced away when I smiled. He was fixated on the safety card in the seat pocket in front of him. I assumed he was shy and overwhelmed, so I left him alone.
I used my phone to check time. Even before we took off, I could feel his anxiousness. Several minutes passed before the plane taxiing down the runway, and then it happened…
The boy reached out with a shaking hand without looking at me. He held up a crumpled paper without speaking, his eyes wide. I saw a ten-dollar bill when I took the note.
The boy didn’t look at me and held out the paper until I took it. Confusion set in, I took the note, examining the precise handwriting. After reading the note, I realized I had to call his mother.
The note said:
“If you’re reading this, my autistic son is sitting next to you. He may be apprehensive and repeatedly inquire when the plane will land. His mom is waiting for him at home and will fetch him up at the airport. Please be gentle and patient. Ten bucks for patience. See my number if he needs anything.”
Reading it made my throat swell. I looked at the boy, who was staring at the seat in front of him with fists curled. The $10 in my hand felt like a weight.
This went beyond a plane kid. A mother’s love and a youngster navigating an intimidating world were the focus. I knew I couldn’t keep the money and be silent.
I desperately looked for my phone. Even for a few hours, little boy needed support. I connected my phone to the plane’s Wi-Fi and texted the note’s number.
“My name is Derek. I’m next to your son on the plane. His health is fine, but I’m here if he needs anything.”
The reply was quick:
“Many thanks, Derek. Despite his hard few days, I know he’ll be fine with you there. Please tell him I’m thinking of him.”
I looked at the boy, who was still looking forward. I remarked, “Hey, buddy,” gently. Mom says hi. She’s thinking of you.”
He looked at me briefly, softening, before returning to the window. He wasn’t a talker, but I wouldn’t let that stop me. I tried to make his flight comfortable.
Do you like planes? I asked to start a conversation.
He nodded gently without looking at me.
“Me too,” I murmured, reclined. “I like how we fly so high. Like being in a gigantic metal bird.”
Though he didn’t answer, I noticed his shoulders relaxing. Inspired, I continued. To spend the $10 the youngster gave me, I signaled the flight attendant.
“Can I get my friend a snack?” I inquired, beaming at the flight attendant.
After receiving a bag of pretzels and a beverage, the boy glanced up, shocked. “Here you go,” I handed him the items. “I thought you were hungry.”
He hesitated before eating, muttering “thank you.” He spoke for the first time since we boarded, so I considered that a win!
As the journey went on, I answered his queries about how long it would be and whether we would fly over any fascinating areas. I sensed his nerves were calmed by my calm speech.
One time, I took a selfie with us. I only wanted a simple photo to send to his parents. I requested permission from my silent companion before shooting the shot.
He reacted by bending closer to fit in the frame. After I showed him the photo, he smiled for the first time! The smile was modest and timid, but a smile nonetheless! As a 30-year-old man without children or experience with kids, that was a win!
Could I forward this to your mom? More confidently, I asked. He nodded, so I emailed it with a simple note: “He’s doing great. We’re having fun.”
She replied quickly and gratefully, looking relieved. I assumed she was on the edge of her seat, concerned. I realized how difficult it must have been for her to leave her son on a plane with a stranger.
The youngster was more relaxed when we descended! I even heard him talk about his favorite video games and his excitement to see his mom. I saw a complete change from the frightened, fidgety boy I met at the start of the flight!
After landing and going to the gate, he asked, “Will you walk with me to get my luggage? My mother is scheduled to meet me there.”
“Of course,” I said without hesitation. “We’ll find her!”
As we departed and navigated the busy terminal, I saw a woman impatiently waiting at the luggage claim. Her eyes scanned the crowd. Her face lighted up as she spotted her son strolling next to me!
She ran over and hugged him firmly!
“Thank you,” she said, emotional. “You have no idea what this means to me.”
Without expecting it, I grinned and felt warm in my chest. “It was no problem at all,” I said. “Great kid.”
She was lovely and looked my age or younger. I liked her son and wanted to know her, but I didn’t know her past.
After looking at the youngster and me, she extended her hand and said, “I am Diane, he’s Elliot.”
“Nice to officially meet you, Diane and Elliot, I am Derek,” I said, shaking their hands.
I asked Diane, “Would you like to grab a coffee sometime?” after touching her palm and feeling an electric current. To thank me?
Simple question, yet it surprised me! I expected a brief meeting, but as I looked at her and her son, I felt a strange connection! An awareness that this meeting was not random.
To my amazement, she smiled and said, “I’d like that.”
Elliot’s solo flight was revealed while we waited for his luggage. Her son was visiting her ex-husband, who last minute refused to travel back with him and put him on the plane alone.
This brave little man was alone with only a note his mom requested him to write and retain and $10 his father handed him before sending him go.
I knew Diane wasn’t a bad mother, and our long-distance relationship reinforced this. After two years, the scared boy on the aircraft became my stepson!
His mom, my amazing wife, still giggles as she tells people how a note and a $10 money became our best experience! A short flight altered my life forever!
