Chapter 6: The Woman He Threw Away
For the first time since I had met him, Silas Sterling had no weapon in his voice.
No insult.
No command.
No polished cruelty.
Only shame.
“I threw you out in the rain,” he said.
I looked at him coldly.
“Yes.”
“I called you someone who didn’t belong.”
“You did.”
He lowered his eyes.
“And you were carrying my family’s truth before either of us knew it.”
I almost laughed, but there was no humor left in me.
“No, Mr. Sterling. I was carrying my own exhaustion. My own grief. My own life. You just decided none of it mattered because my shoes were cheap.”
He flinched.
Good.
Some truths should hurt before they heal.
Behind us, Vivian’s heels struck the chapel floor.
She saw the open envelope in my hand.
Her face twisted.
“That belongs to my family.”
I stepped back.
“No. It belongs to mine.”
And this time, Silas moved between us.
