The monitor screamed one long, merciless note.
Arthur Sterling’s hand went limp around my wrist, but his final words kept burning through me like a fever.
Silas stood in the doorway, soaked from the rain, his face drained of all the arrogance he had worn so easily days before.
“What did he say?” he whispered.
I could not answer.
Not because I wanted to protect him.
Because the truth Arthur had forced into my hands was too impossible to speak.
Behind Silas, the rest of the Sterling family rushed in. His stepmother, Vivian, came first, wrapped in pearls and fury.
“What happened?” she demanded. “Why was she alone with him?”
I looked down at Arthur’s lifeless face.
For years, the world had known him as a ruthless king of glass towers and luxury hotels.
But in his last seconds, he had not asked for his son.
He had asked me to remember a name.
