Chapter 2: The Name That Broke the Room
Silas stepped closer.
“Tell me what my father said.”
His voice cracked on the word father.
I looked at him and saw two men at once.
The cruel stranger who had thrown me into the rain.
And the frightened son who had just arrived too late.
Vivian cut between us.
“She doesn’t need to tell you anything. She needs to explain why Arthur died under her care.”
I lifted my eyes to her.
“He was dying before you entered the building.”
Her face hardened.
“How dare you?”
Silas did not look at her. He kept staring at me.
“Please,” he said, softer this time. “What did he say?”
I swallowed.
“He said your family destroyed a woman named Elena Marlow.”
The room changed.
Vivian stopped breathing.
One of Silas’s uncles muttered something under his breath.
Silas frowned.
“Who is Elena Marlow?”
I felt my pulse hammer.
“My mother.”
