Chapter 4: Three Days Without Her
The turning point came when Renata left for a three-day business trip to Monterrey.
The house changed the moment her car disappeared through the gates. It did not become peaceful, exactly, but the air loosened. The walls seemed to exhale.
Sofia did not leave her room for hours.
When I finally brought her dinner, she was sitting on the floor with her back against the bed, clutching her stuffed fox, Toño, so tightly her fingers had gone pale.
Her eyes were red-rimmed.
They searched my face for danger I was desperate to prove did not exist.
I placed the tray near the door and sat on the floor a respectful distance away.
“I’m not going to hurt you, Sofi,” I said quietly. “I’m just here to make sure you’re safe.”
She looked at the door.
Then she looked back at me.
