For weeks, I lived inside a state of high-alert confusion.
I watched Sofia flinch when doors opened. I watched her eyes track Renata across the room. I watched her go silent whenever my wife placed a hand on her shoulder.
None of it felt normal.
My brother had warned me before the wedding. He told me Renata was too polished, too controlled, too skilled at making people doubt themselves. I had brushed him off, offended by the idea that he could see something I could not.
I wanted the family.
I wanted Sunday dinners, school plays, shared holidays, and the kind of stability I had craved for years.
