I was born Naomi Marie Blackwood.
In 1981, I became Naomi Canton when I married Nicholas, and for more than forty years, I carried his name with pride.
When Nicholas died at sixty-eight after fourteen long months of illness, I thought the hardest part of my life would be learning how to wake up in a house without him.
I was wrong.
The real shock came afterward, when the two people I expected to stand beside me began looking at everything Nicholas and I had built as though it were already theirs.
We had started with almost nothing.
Our farmhouse in Pennsylvania was modest, and the twenty acres behind it had been neglected for years when we first took over the land.
The apple trees were old.
Many barely produced fruit.
Nicholas saw possibility where everyone else saw work.
So did I.
We spent years pruning, replanting, repairing irrigation lines, and learning everything we could about running an orchard.
Eventually, those twenty acres became **Canton Family Orchards**.
It never made us rich.
But it gave us a living.
More importantly, it gave us a life.
Our children, Brandon and Melissa, grew up among those trees.
They helped during harvests when they were young, complained about sticky apple crates as teenagers, and eventually moved away to build careers and families of their own.
Neither showed much interest in running the orchard.
That never bothered Nicholas.
“They need their own lives,” he would say.
I agreed.
So after his death, I expected grief to bring us closer.
At first, it seemed to.
Brandon called more often.
Melissa stayed several nights.
We looked through old photographs and talked about their father.
But gradually, the conversations changed.
Memories became questions.
Questions about accounts.
The orchard.
Property values.
Insurance.
One evening, Brandon arrived with Melissa and placed a document on my kitchen table.
“We’ve been talking,” he said.
That sentence immediately made me uneasy.
“About what?”
“The orchard.”
I looked between them.
“What about it?”
Brandon pushed the paperwork toward me.
“We think it makes sense for us to take over.”
I stared at him.
“You don’t work here.”
“We can manage it.”
“You live two hours away.”
Melissa sighed.
“Mom, we’re trying to make this easier.”
There it was.
The word people often use when they have already decided something for you.
**Easier.**
I picked up the document.
Near the bottom was Nicholas’s signature.
Except it wasn’t.
I had watched my husband sign his name for more than forty years.
This one leaned incorrectly.
The “N” was too narrow.
The final stroke in Canton curved upward instead of down.
I looked at Brandon.
