Thailand values elephants. Thong Bai, a Thai bull elephant, has entertained tourists for over 40 years.

The Elephant Sanctuary founder Lek Chailert advocates for elephant rescue. He frequently updates his Facebook page regarding elephants like Thong Bai.

One tweet by Lek stated, “More than forty years he has served people, and he deserves his freedom.”

After many years, Thong Bai was released.

Thong Bai, a private elephant, appeared in many ads. He frequently appears in beer advertising, films, and weddings.

Lek took Khun NuNa Silpa-archa to Surin province a year before the elephant’s release to view Thong Bai and other elephants.

After seeing Thong Bai’s former life and majestic presence, the guest decided to help elephants. She labored valiantly to release the lovely elephant.

The elephants Khun NuNa Silpa-archa met were hard to unchain. She won a year later.

The elephant’s owner and environmentalists agreed to let him roam freely in an enclosure.

His new home would be part of the Surin Project, which improves elephant living circumstances and mahouts’ finances.

The community built Thong Bai a shelter and prepared him for release. Thai Beverage funded construction and the Surin government maintained the land.

The elephant now has a secure home to roam. His bonds and forced labor are gone. His habitat features dirt, shade, a fountain, and lots of space.

“The day everyone waited for has arrived. Over four decades of shackles and at last release,” writes Lek. “Thong Bai, the Legend of Surin, is free from his chains. Welcome to his new home, today. He appeared hesitant and afraid of his new freedom and perhaps shy to explore without being taught what to do.”

No animal should be caged and tortured for entertainment. Please circulate this essential message to engage more people in the issue.
