Chapter 7: The Files Already Open
While the team stabilized Marcus, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was my attorney.
Three words appeared on the screen.
Files are ready.
I looked at Marcus, who had spent months believing I was too tired, too loyal, and too ordinary to protect myself. He never noticed the late-night meetings. He never questioned the new passwords. He never asked why certain documents had quietly disappeared from the house safe.
He thought betrayal was power.
He did not understand that betrayal also leaves paperwork.
Vanessa saw my screen before I turned it away. Her lips parted.
“What did you do?” she whispered.
I slipped the phone back into my pocket.
“My job.”
Marcus’s monitor beeped steadily, the only calm sound in the room.
He had survived the night.
But survival was not the same as escape.
