Vanessa understood exactly what I meant.
In a hospital, records are everything. Times. Names. Statements. Injuries. Bloodwork. Who arrived with whom. Who claimed what relationship. Who lied before realizing the truth had already been written down.
I picked up the admission tablet and entered the first note with careful precision.
Marcus watched my fingers move.
“Elena,” he rasped. “Listen to me.”
I leaned over him, checking his pulse with a professional touch so detached that his eyes widened.
For months, he had controlled every conversation. Every dinner. Every accusation. Every lie. He had spoken over me until silence became my only safe place.
Not tonight.
I met his gaze.
“No,” I whispered, close enough that only he could hear. “Tonight, you listen.”
