Chapter 4: The Charge Nurse
Vanessa’s eyes locked onto mine.
Her sobbing stopped so suddenly that the room felt colder. She recognized the expression on my face. It was not grief. It was not shock.
It was calculation.
“Elena,” she whispered.
Marcus turned his head, pain twisting his features. But beneath the pain was panic. Real panic. The kind that comes when a man realizes the woman he dismissed has been standing at the center of his downfall all along.
I stepped closer, snapping on a fresh pair of gloves.
The sound echoed through the trauma bay.
“Good evening,” I said, as calmly as if I were reading a chart. “Rough night?”
Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“You can’t treat him,” she said quickly. “You’re biased. You’re his wife.”
I looked down at her hand until she slowly released me.
“I am not his doctor,” I said. “I am the charge nurse.”
