Riley Green Tips His Hat to the Classics With a Hank Williams Cover

Riley Green has long been celebrated for bringing a traditional edge to modern country music — and his latest social media post proves just how deeply his roots run.

The Alabama native recently shared a stripped-down cover of Hank Williams’ classic “(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle,” giving fans a raw, heartfelt glimpse of the music that inspires him.

    Honoring a Country Legend

Originally recorded in 1951, “(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle” was co-written by Hank Williams and Jimmie Davis. The track became Williams’ 14th consecutive Top 10 single and stood out for his haunting imitation of a train whistle on the word “lonesome.”

The song’s influence reached far beyond its release — Johnny Cash later cited it as inspiration for “Folsom Prison Blues” and even recorded it himself for his 1957 debut album Johnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar!

For Green, the connection is more than musical. Both he and Williams hail from Alabama, and paying homage to one of the genre’s founding voices adds another layer of authenticity to his performance.

    Riley Green’s Rendition

Filmed ahead of his show at the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood, Florida, Green’s cover is as simple as it is powerful. With nothing but his acoustic guitar, the “Worst Way” singer leaned into the song’s lonesome ache, even pulling off Williams’ signature whistle-like vocal delivery.

Green captioned the video with just one word — “Hank” — letting the music speak for itself.

Fans praised the moment as another example of Green’s commitment to keeping classic country alive in today’s landscape. His easy authenticity and reverence for tradition have become trademarks, setting him apart from many of his contemporaries.

    Carrying Tradition Forward

Riley Green has never been shy about crediting his influences, often naming Merle Haggard, George Jones, and his own grandfather as cornerstones of his sound. By revisiting timeless tracks like “Lonesome Whistle,” he not only pays tribute to his heroes but also ensures that new generations of country listeners stay connected to the music’s foundation.

For fans, it’s a reminder that even as Green headlines massive tours and racks up hits, he remains grounded in the songs and stories that first defined the genre.
