The question of whether spanking is an acceptable form of discipline has been a topic of debate, with varying opinions on its effectiveness and appropriateness. The American Academy of Pediatrics has expressed concerns about the harm and ineffectiveness of spanking, but some parents, like Kelly Clarkson, continue to defend their choice.

In a recent radio interview, Clarkson, a mother of two (River Rose, 8, and Remy, 6), revealed her perspective on spanking as a disciplinary measure. She emphasized that when she mentions spanking, she doesn’t mean hitting hard but rather a form of mild correction.

Clarkson defended her stance by sharing that she grew up with spanking as a disciplinary method and sees nothing wrong with it. Coming from the South, she explained, “I feel okay about getting spanked by my parents because I’ve done well in life.” She added that receiving permission to be spanked by authorities, such as the principal, was part of her upbringing.

Acknowledging that her approach to parenting might be divisive, Clarkson expressed that it can be challenging to discipline children in public due to differing opinions. Despite potential criticism, she stands by her belief in the appropriateness of a mild spanking when needed.

Clarkson also mentioned that she gives her children advance warning before resorting to spanking, stating, “Hello, this is ridiculous, I’m going to spank you on your bottom if you don’t stop right now, and it’s actually helped.” She clarified that she doesn’t employ this method frequently.

The debate surrounding disciplinary practices continues, with varied perspectives on what is considered effective and appropriate in raising children. Clarkson’s openness about her choice adds to the ongoing conversation about parenting styles and discipline.
