Optical illusions have a strange way of making us question what we’re seeing. No matter how carefully you examine an image, your brain can still interpret the visual information differently from what is actually there.

One particularly confusing optical illusion has been circulating online for exactly that reason. At first glance, the photograph seems perfectly ordinary: six young women are sitting closely together on a couch.

Then you look at their legs.

There appear to be only five pairs.

So where did the sixth woman’s legs go?

The photograph became a popular brain teaser because the answer isn’t immediately obvious. You can stare at the women individually, count them again, and then count the visible legs — and somehow the numbers still don’t seem to match.

Of course, nobody is actually missing any legs. The confusion is created by positioning, overlapping clothing, and the way our brains separate objects in a crowded image.

Optical illusions work because seeing isn’t simply a matter of our eyes recording an image like a camera. The brain must interpret the information our eyes provide, rapidly making assumptions about shapes, depth, movement, shadows, and where one object ends and another begins.

Usually, this system works remarkably well.

Occasionally, however, the visual clues are arranged in just the right way to fool us.

That’s exactly what seems to be happening with the six women on the couch.

After the image gained attention on Reddit, users began trying to identify which woman appeared to have lost her legs.

One popular explanation focused on the women sitting toward the left side of the couch.

A commenter suggested:

“The second girl’s legs are behind the first girl’s legs.” Continue Reading ⬇️
