In other words, the apparently missing legs haven’t disappeared at all. They are positioned in such a way that they overlap with another woman’s legs, making two separate people initially appear to share the same pair.
But because of the similar colors, crossed positions, and overlapping bodies, identifying exactly which leg belongs to which woman can still be surprisingly difficult.
Another Reddit user offered a more detailed breakdown of the illusion, concentrating on several visual clues that can help separate the women.
“Left to right, #1, #2, #3, #4. Number 1 has her legs crossed, and no tear in the knee. Number 2 has only one leg visible, the tear is in her knee. Those legs are blending together.”
That torn section of the jeans is one of the most useful clues.
Instead of looking at the women as complete figures, try tracing each visible leg individually from the hip or knee downward. Once you stop assuming that the most obvious pair of legs belongs to the person directly above them, the illusion becomes easier to understand.
The commenter continued by pointing out another detail:
“Follow that tear down, there’s a split where there’s a sock on the right and not on the left. Number 2 has a tear in her knee and a visible white sock.”
The women’s positions also contribute heavily to the confusion.
Several of them are leaning sideways rather than sitting directly above their own legs. Because they are packed closely together on the couch, our brains naturally try to connect each upper body with whichever legs appear directly underneath it.
That’s where the illusion gets us.
The “missing” pair of legs is therefore not actually hidden in some mysterious part of the photograph. Instead, the legs overlap and visually blend with those of the women sitting nearby.
Once you identify the ripped jeans and follow the individual legs downward, the arrangement starts making considerably more sense.
But even after knowing the explanation, some people may still struggle to see it immediately.
That’s part of what makes optical illusions so entertaining.
Your logical brain knows there must be six complete people sitting on that couch, yet your visual system keeps insisting that something doesn’t add up.
So take another look at the photograph and try this simple trick: don’t count the women first.
Start with the legs.
Trace each one upward individually and pay close attention to the ripped knee and visible sock.
Once you finally spot where the supposedly “missing” legs are hiding, the image suddenly looks completely different.
And that’s the real fun of this viral brain teaser: after you’ve solved it, show it to someone else without revealing the answer and see how long it takes them to find the sixth pair of legs.
