Emmy Russell Honors Her “Memaw” Loretta Lynn with an Emotional Rendition of “Lay Me Down”

    A Granddaughter Carrying on a Legend’s Legacy

Loretta Lynn’s voice may have gone silent in 2022, but her spirit continues to echo through her granddaughter, Emmy Russell. The two shared a bond that was far deeper than music — it was rooted in love, faith, and a shared calling to tell stories through song.

Emmy often described her “memaw” as her greatest mentor. She toured with Loretta as a child and grew up backstage watching her command audiences with grace and truth. But the lesson Loretta valued most wasn’t about fame or success.

“The best advice she ever gave me was to love God,” Emmy once said. “She was such a lover of God, and she’d always tell me, ‘Listen to Him and follow His voice.’”

A Song of Farewell and Faith

When Loretta Lynn passed away in 2022 at the age of 90, Emmy was heartbroken. Just weeks later, she found the strength to honor her grandmother the way she knew best — through song.

At Loretta’s memorial service at the Grand Ole Opry, Emmy joined Willie Nelson’s son, Lukas Nelson, to perform “Lay Me Down.” The 2016 duet between Loretta and Willie was their first and only collaboration — a quiet reflection on life, death, and peace beyond the earthly world:

“When they lay me down someday,
my soul will rise, then fly away.
This old world will turn around,
I’ll be at peace when they lay me down.”

Their words took on new meaning that day, as Emmy’s trembling voice carried through the Opry House — a granddaughter helping to lay her hero to rest.

A Heavenly Tribute at the Opry 100 Honors

In May 2025, Emmy once again revisited “Lay Me Down” during the Opry 100 Honors, a special tribute concert celebrating Loretta’s legacy. Standing beneath the same stage lights her grandmother once graced, Emmy delivered a performance filled with grace and quiet power.

As the final notes rang out, she wiped away tears — and so did nearly everyone in the audience. When the Grand Ole Opry later released the full video, fans around the world flooded the comments, describing it as “angelic,” “heart-wrenching,” and “a spiritual experience.”

From the Opry Stage to American Idol

Many fans were first introduced to Emmy during her 2024 run on American Idol, where she advanced to the Top 5. Among her most talked-about performances was her emotional rendition of her grandmother’s signature song, “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

Rather than mimicking Loretta, Emmy offered her own soulful interpretation — fragile, reverent, and deeply human. The performance struck a chord across generations, with millions of viewers calling it one of the most moving moments in Idol history.

A Legacy of Faith, Family, and Song

Through every note she sings, Emmy Russell keeps Loretta Lynn’s legacy alive — not just through bloodline, but through spirit. Her performances remind the world that true country music isn’t just about fame or nostalgia; it’s about storytelling, faith, and heart.

And when Emmy sings “Lay Me Down,” it isn’t just a song — it’s a prayer, a memory, and a promise that her “memaw’s” light will never fade.
