Three beachgoers dead after sea mines wash up on beach and explode at popular tourist spot

Three people died when sea mines drifted too close to Zatoka Beach, which is near Odesa in southern Ukraine. The victims, two men and a woman, were swimming in waters that were off-limits when the explosions happened about 165 feet from shore.

Oleh Kiper, the governor of the region, said that all three died right away and warned that going into waters that aren’t checked is “fatally dangerous.” Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, officials have told tourists many times to stay away from closed areas along the Black Sea.

Many beaches have been closed because of the danger of sea mines, unexploded mortars, and bombs dropped from planes. Since 2022, both Russia and Ukraine have put mines in the Black Sea. The tides or strong currents can move them toward shore.

Local police say that two explosions of unknown objects killed the people. The BBC says that the names of the dead people are still being figured out.

The Black Sea used to be a great place to go on vacation, but now it’s one of the most dangerous places to swim. Officials want to make it clear that beaches that are safe on land may not be safe in the water.

The event is a sad reminder of how dangerous the war still is. Even far from the front lines, the war’s effects threaten civilians every day.

In another news story, U.S. President Donald Trump said he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, 2025, to try to find a way to end the war. A lot of people around the world are paying attention to the meeting.

Some news outlets say that Trump might also ask Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to join the talks. The meeting’s details are still being worked out, but there is still hope that the conflict will end.
