Leah Messer has grown up in front of millions of viewers, but now the longtime Teen Mom star is watching her own daughters reach an age that brings back powerful memories of the life-changing choices she made as a teenager.
The West Virginia native first entered the public eye through 16 and Pregnant before becoming one of the best-known faces of Teen Mom 2. Leah became a mother to twin daughters Aliannah and Aleeah while still a teenager, and much of her adult life has unfolded in front of MTV cameras.
Today, Leah is raising her twin daughters along with her younger daughter, Adalynn. Over the years, audiences have watched her navigate young motherhood, marriage, divorce, personal struggles, mental health challenges, and the complicated realities of raising children while growing up herself.
Now, however, Leah is facing a very different milestone: her daughters are becoming teenagers and beginning to experience dating, school dances, and increasing independence.
That has forced Leah to look back at her own childhood and the circumstances that led to her becoming a young mother.
Before pregnancy changed everything, Leah was a cheerleader dating a football player and living what appeared to be a fairly typical high school life. But teen pregnancy was hardly unusual in her family.
When Leah gave birth, her mother was only 34 and her grandmother was 51.
Reflecting on that family history, Leah told Vogue:
“It was normal. That was the life for many women before me. This was what was expected.”
Leah, however, hopes things will be different for her daughters.
As Aliannah and Aleeah grow closer to the age Leah was when she became pregnant, she has become increasingly focused on having honest conversations with them about relationships, reproductive health, and their futures.
“It’s the little things, like booking their first gynecologist appointments together next year and having these open conversations with them… that I think will be enough to break the cycle.” Continue Reading ⬇️
