Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood Stun with Surprise Duet at 2024 CMA Awards
One of the most unforgettable moments of the 2024 CMA Awards came when Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood teamed up for a surprise performance of their duet I’m Gonna Love You, leaving the audience mesmerized by their vocal strength and onstage chemistry.
The heartfelt ballad, which celebrates unwavering love through life’s ups and downs, was released earlier this year on the deluxe edition of Johnson’s Leather album. Determined to turn the track into a duet, Johnson had one voice in mind—Carrie Underwood. Her signature blend of power and grace brought a new layer of emotion to the song.
Their CMA performance was nothing short of breathtaking. Johnson opened the song alone at the piano, setting an intimate tone. Moments later, Underwood appeared unannounced, sparking audible gasps from the crowd as she stepped into the spotlight.
Elegant and poised, Underwood’s harmonies intertwined with Johnson’s vocals, deepening the song’s emotional pull. The duet showcased their respect for one another and highlighted how their contrasting styles come together in perfect harmony.
With lyrics centered on enduring love through thick and thin, their passionate delivery created a moment of pure magic that resonated deeply with the audience.
Johnson, who earned five nominations that night, reflected on his journey from independent beginnings to becoming one of the genre’s most celebrated voices. For Underwood, the performance marked her much-anticipated return to the CMA stage after a two-year hiatus, adding even more significance to the night.
Together, they lit up the stage—two stars shining brightly, delivering a performance that symbolized both tradition and progress in country music.
The duet was widely praised as a standout moment of the night, underscoring the power of collaboration and solidifying both artists’ lasting impact on the genre.
