Kitty Dukakis, Advocate and Enduring Partner, Dies at 88
Kitty Dukakis, the wife of former Massachusetts governor and Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis, has passed away at the age of 88. Her son, John Dukakis, confirmed her death on Friday night, following complications from dementia, surrounded by family.
Kitty was known for her openness about personal struggles, including her battles with depression and addiction. Her family shared that she opened up about her vulnerabilities to help others face their own challenges. In a statement, they described her as “loving, feisty and fun,” with a “keen sensitivity to people from all walks of life.” She and Michael shared more than 60 years of a strong and loving partnership.
Kitty became a prominent figure for her tireless support of her husband’s political career. Michael Dukakis, born in Brookline, Massachusetts, had a distinguished career, including serving as governor and later as the Democratic nominee for president in 1988. Throughout this time, Kitty was by his side, offering steadfast support. She played a key role in his presidential campaign, influencing voters across the country and advocating for issues she deeply believed in.
Apart from her role as Massachusetts’ first lady, Kitty was an advocate for various causes. She worked as a social worker and a modern dance instructor, and she championed the arts, homelessness, and the rights of vulnerable communities. She was also an outspoken advocate for mental health, a cause she was deeply passionate about, given her own experiences.
In tribute to her, U.S. Congressman Jimmy Gomez praised her advocacy, remembering her as a “fierce advocate for mental health” and a “loving mother and friend.” Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey also paid tribute, calling Kitty a “force for good” in public life, citing her work on issues like recovery, gender equality, and human rights.
Kitty was a loving mother, a fierce advocate for mental health, and a friend.

Steve Kerrigan, Chair of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, reflected on Kitty’s advocacy work, particularly her efforts for refugees, the homeless, and women in leadership roles. He noted that her bravery in openly discussing her struggles with depression and substance use helped break down stigma and inspired many to seek help.
Kitty Dukakis’ legacy as an advocate, partner, and mother will be remembered for the profound impact she had on those around her and the causes she championed. The Dukakis family, as well as many others in Massachusetts and beyond, mourn her loss.
