Demi Moore ‘gutted’ at Oscars loss, says body language expert

Demi Moore, 62, Reportedly ‘Devastated’ After Best Actress Oscar Loss

Demi Moore, 62, was said to be heartbroken after missing out on the Academy Award for Best Actress, according to body language expert Darren Stanton.

At the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday night in Los Angeles, 25-year-old Mikey Madison took home one of the evening’s most prestigious honors—Best Actress.

Madison, who led Sean Baker’s Anora, managed to edge out tough competition, including Moore, who had been a strong favorite following a successful awards season.

The win marked Madison’s first-ever Oscar nomination, adding to her growing list of accolades, including a Best Actress victory at the 2025 BAFTAs. She triumphed over an impressive lineup that featured Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, and Karla Sofía Gascón.

Meanwhile, Moore had been a dominant force throughout the season, securing a Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, and a SAG Award for her performance as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance. Many had predicted she would take home the Oscar as well.

According to Stanton, Moore’s reaction to losing was a mix of shock and deep disappointment. “Demi was absolutely crushed not to win,” he analyzed in a report for Betfair Casino. “Her face revealed that she was trying to keep her emotions in check when Mikey’s name was announced.”

The expert noted that Moore, who had been riding high on awards recognition, seemed genuinely taken aback. “Her mouth dropped open, her eyes widened—she was clearly in disbelief and struggling to process the moment,” Stanton explained.

He also pointed out that Moore’s smiles appeared forced. “They weren’t natural; they reflected the disappointment she was feeling,” he added.

The unexpected outcome has fueled intense debate on social media, with fans of both actresses passionately weighing in.

One fan joked, “Demi Moore losing to Mikey Madison is literally the plot of The Substance.” Another expressed frustration, writing, “Demi Moore was absolutely robbed, and you can’t convince me otherwise. The Oscars just made it clear they don’t respect older women OR horror films.”

However, some supporters of Moore chose to focus on the positives. “At the end of the day, Demi Moore had an incredible awards season and has earned a whole new generation of fans,” one user pointed out.

Despite the setback, Moore’s career shows no signs of slowing down. Following her acclaimed performance in The Substance, which is currently streaming on MUBI, she is set to star in I Love Boosters, a sci-fi comedy directed by Boots Riley. She’ll appear alongside Keke Palmer, LaKeith Stanfield, and Will Poulter.

As for Madison, her award-winning film Anora—which has already racked up multiple honors—will be available for streaming on Hulu starting March 17 in the U.S.
