Joni Mitchell, the legendary 80-year-old singer-songwriter, made history with her first-ever performance at the Grammys on Sunday evening. The iconic artist took the stage to sing her 1966 hit “Both Sides Now,” joined by a stellar lineup including Brandi Carlile, Blake Mills, Allison Russell, Lucius, Jacob Collier, and Sista Strings.
Despite being nominated 18 times and winning 10 Grammys throughout her illustrious career, Mitchell had never performed at the Grammy Awards until this moment. Her 10th Grammy win came on Sunday night for the Best Folk Album.
In 2015, Mitchell faced a significant health challenge when she suffered a brain aneurysm, leading her to retreat from the public eye. Surviving the aneurysm, she embarked on a journey of relearning basic skills. Mitchell shared, “I’m learning. I’m looking at videos that are on the net to see where I put my fingers, you know. It’s amazing what an aneurysm knocks out – how to get out of the chair!… You have to relearn everything.”

Brandi Carlile, among other musicians, played a crucial role in Mitchell’s recovery and return to the stage. In 2023, when Mitchell performed at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington, Carlile expressed awe, stating, “[I’ve] watched one of the most miraculous things I’ve seen in my life, and now you get to see it.” The performance marked Mitchell’s first headlining, ticketed show in 20 years.
