The Early Years and Rocky Childhood

Shania Twain, born Eilleen Regina Edwards on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, Ontario, is widely regarded as the “Queen of Country Pop.” However, behind her success lies a story of struggle and hardship. Shania’s childhood was far from glamorous, growing up in poverty in Timmins, rural Canada. Her step-father, Jerry Twain, who legally adopted her and her sisters, struggled to provide for the family.

Shania’s mother, Sharon, and Jerry had a turbulent marriage. At one point, Shania convinced her mother to leave Jerry, and they sought refuge at a homeless shelter in Toronto. However, when Shania was 16, her mother returned to Jerry, and they decided to give their marriage another try.

Due to the instability of her childhood home, Shania felt she had to rely on herself and lived in “survivor mode” into her adult years. Despite the difficulties, she pursued her passion for music and started performing at bars at a young age to help support her family financially.

The Road to Stardom

Shania’s talent as a singer and songwriter caught the attention of industry professionals. In the mid-1980s, she joined her first band, Longshot, and later moved to Toronto to further her music career. Her big break came when she performed on the Tommy Hunter Show at the age of 13, gaining exposure as a country singer.

After releasing her self-titled debut album in 1993, Shania caught the attention of record producer Mutt Lange, who became her collaborator and husband. Together, they wrote and produced hit songs for her albums “The Woman in Me” (1995) and “Come On Over” (1997), which propelled her to international stardom. The latter album sold over 40 million copies worldwide and featured chart-topping hits like “You’re Still The One” and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman”.

Personal Triumphs and Heartbreak

In 2001, Shania welcomed a son named Eja with her husband, Mutt Lange. However, their marriage faced turmoil, and in 2008, they separated due to Lange’s affair with Shania’s best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Shania opted for a low-key and private approach during her pregnancy, withholding any details about Eja’s birth from the media.

However, a few years later, Shania’s personal life took a dramatic turn when she faced a highly publicized divorce, revealing less favorable aspects of her relationship. Prior to the divorce, rumors about troubles in their marriage had circulated in the gossip columns, but Shania had denied them in 1997, emphasizing the strength of their bond.

Nonetheless, in 2008, Shania and Mutt separated due to his affair with Shania’s close friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. The revelation left Shania devastated, and she experienced profound emotional pain, crying incessantly and seeking solace in frequent baths. She confessed to feeling a significant blow to her self-esteem when her husband left her for her best friend, expressing her deep heartbreak.

Shania and Marie-Anne had initially become friends when Marie-Anne was hired as an assistant and interpreter for Mutt Lange. After discovering the affair, Shania confronted Marie-Anne, expressing her disappointment and considering her a deceitful person.

However, amidst the turmoil, Shania eventually found love again. In 2011, she married businessman Frédéric Thiébaud, who happened to be Marie-Anne’s former husband. Shania and Frédéric bonded over their shared experience of heartbreak and tied the knot in Puerto Rico surrounded by approximately 40 close friends and family members. Shania regarded Frédéric as a true friend and a loving partner who revitalized her perspective on love.

Shania Twain currently resides in Corseaux, Switzerland, with her husband, leading a private and low-profile life. While she seldom grants interviews, she continues to captivate audiences with her musical talents. Her recent endeavors include performing in a Las Vegas show that takes fans on a retrospective journey through her successful career. Additionally, Shania has made appearances in various films, such as “Trading Paint” alongside John Travolta in 2019 and portraying Jeremy Camp’s mother in the autobiographical movie “I Still Believe” in 2020.
