Gumby: The Shelter Dog That Found His True Calling
A Unique Shelter Story
Animal shelter staff encounter a variety of animals and hear many different stories about why owners decide to surrender their pets. While they often suspect there’s more to these stories than meets the eye, they continue to help animals find their forever homes.
Gumby’s Journey to the Shelter
In Fall 2014, a loving dog named Gumby was brought to a Charleston, South Carolina shelter. The staff were immediately taken by his playful and lovable nature, and they believed it wouldn’t be long before Gumby found his forever home.
Indeed, Gumby was adopted just a few days after arriving at the shelter. However, his new owner brought him back only three days later.
A Repeated Pattern
Surprisingly, Gumby was adopted and returned to the shelter ten times, twice by his own accord. The shelter staff were puzzled by this pattern, but they soon realized that Gumby considered the shelter his home and felt needed there.
Gumby’s New Role
Gumby embraced his role at the shelter, offering tremendous empathy and support to new dogs that arrived. His comforting presence helped these often-distressed animals feel more at home.
A Community Hero
Gumby’s impact extended beyond the shelter, as he became an important figure in the local community. He was featured in a local firemen’s charity calendar and became a regular blood donor, with his blood group suitable for both dogs and cats.
Gumby’s story reminds us of the power of love and compassion, and the importance of finding our true calling in life. Share this heartwarming story with your family and friends on Facebook.
