The unusual gift soon became the most intriguing part of the encounter. Small enough to fit comfortably in a hand, the green carving appeared to resemble a miniature gourd decorated with intricate markings.

After photographs of the object circulated online, people began trying to determine exactly what the stranger had given away.

One possibility quickly attracted attention. The object resembles a hulu, the distinctive bottle-shaped gourd that has appeared in Chinese culture and traditional symbolism for centuries.

Hulu gourds have historically served practical purposes, including as containers, but their recognizable shape eventually acquired important symbolic associations. Decorative versions can be produced from natural gourds as well as materials such as wood, metal, ceramic, glass, and stone.

The object given to the helpful driver appeared to resemble green stone, leading some observers to wonder whether it could be jade or a jade-like material. However, identifying a stone — much less establishing its age, authenticity, or monetary value — from a photograph alone would be extremely difficult.

Its cultural meaning may ultimately be more interesting than its financial value.

Within Chinese tradition, the hulu has long been associated with ideas including good health, longevity, protection, prosperity, and good fortune. It is commonly seen as an auspicious symbol and can be displayed or carried as a charm.

That possibility gives the stranger’s gesture another layer of meaning.

He may not have been attempting to repay the cost of the gasoline dollar for dollar. Instead, he could have been offering something he considered personally significant — perhaps a symbol of protection or good fortune for the person who had unexpectedly helped him.

Of course, without knowing more about the stranger or the object’s history, its exact significance remains uncertain. It could have been something recently purchased, an inexpensive decorative carving, or an item he had carried for years.

But that uncertainty is precisely what makes the encounter so fascinating.

The driver hadn’t stopped because he expected compensation. He simply saw someone experiencing a problem and decided he was in a position to help.

For the stranded man, however, accepting assistance from a complete stranger may have created a powerful desire to offer something in return. Without enough money to repay the favor conventionally, he apparently chose an object he already possessed.

Whether the green carving is financially valuable almost becomes beside the point.

If it was indeed intended as a hulu charm, the symbolism makes the exchange particularly fitting. A stranger received help when he needed it most, then potentially responded by giving his helper a traditional symbol associated with protection and good fortune.

There is also something refreshing about the fact that neither person appears to have approached the situation like a transaction.

One gave because somebody needed help.

The other gave because somebody had shown him kindness.

The mysterious green object may eventually be identified by an expert who can examine its material, markings, craftsmanship, and origin firsthand. Until then, claims about exactly what it is or how much it might be worth should be treated cautiously.

Yet its greatest value may already be obvious.

For the driver, what began as the cost of a little gasoline became an unusual keepsake attached to a story he is unlikely to forget. Every time he sees the small green gourd, he can remember the stranger he encountered beside the road and the unexpected exchange that followed.

Sometimes an act of kindness doesn’t come back as money or another equivalent favor. Sometimes it returns as something far more personal.

The driver gave a stranded stranger enough fuel to continue his journey. In return, the stranger placed a mysterious green charm in his hand.

Whatever that little object is ultimately worth, the story behind it may prove impossible to put a price on.
