Chapter 7: The Choice
My father sat down slowly, as if the weight of his past had finally found his shoulders.
“What do you want me to do?” he asked.
Ethan’s answer was immediate.
“Tell the truth publicly. Restore my mother’s name. Create a fund for workers your company destroyed with false accusations and silence. And leave your daughter’s life alone.”
My father looked at me.
I waited for anger.
For command.
For the voice that had shaped my whole life into obedience.
Instead, he looked tired.
“Is that what you want?” he asked.
I took a breath.
“I want a life that belongs to me.”
His eyes filled.
Maybe he finally saw it then.
He had lost a son by choosing ambition.
And he was about to lose a daughter the same way.
My father nodded once.
“Then I’ll do it.”
Ethan did not soften.
“Not tomorrow. Not after your lawyers polish it. Now.”
My father looked at the phone on the table.
His hand shook as he picked it up.
