Chapter 5: My Marriage Was No Longer a Game
I had married Ethan to defy my father.
A reckless contract.
A dramatic escape.
A way to ruin the business merger my father had planned for my life.
But standing there, watching Ethan face the man who had abandoned him, I felt ashamed of how lightly I had treated his name.
I had offered him money.
I had called it a deal.
I had assumed he was simple because his clothes were worn and his job was humble.
In that moment, I realized I had judged him too.
Just more politely than my father had.
“Ethan,” I said softly.
He did not look at me.
My father reached into his jacket.
“I can fix this. Money, medical care, a position in the company—”
Ethan’s laugh cut him off.
“You still think every wound is an invoice.”
My father froze.
“Then what do you want?”
Ethan looked at him for a long moment.
“My mother’s name cleared.”
The room went cold.
