    Chapter 1: The Name My Father Whispered

    For the first time in my life, my father looked small.

    He was still wearing his tailored gray suit, still carrying himself like the world had been built to obey him. But the moment Ethan stepped into the living room, something inside my father collapsed.

    His face went white.

    Then his knees hit the marble floor.

    “No,” he whispered.

    I stared at him, unable to understand what I was seeing.

    My father did not kneel.

    Not to partners. Not to rivals. Not even at church, unless someone important was watching.

    But there he was, looking up at the man he had called a disgrace.

    Ethan stood perfectly still beside me.

    The calm janitor with the slight limp had vanished.

    In his place was someone colder, older, and far more dangerous than I had realized.

    My father’s voice broke.

    “Nathaniel?”

    Ethan’s jaw tightened.

    “I go by Ethan now.”

    And suddenly, I knew my fake marriage had uncovered something very real.
