George alleges that Treeby became increasingly controlling and abusive shortly after her arrival. Advocates supporting her case claim she was attempting to leave the country and return to the United Kingdom before the fatal incident occurred.
Radha Stirling, CEO of the advocacy organization Detained in Dubai, said George became alarmed after discovering that only a one-way ticket had been booked for her journey. According to Stirling, George wanted to return home and was trying to distance herself from Treeby.
Stirling claims that Treeby became intoxicated and assaulted George, with the violence allegedly continuing after they returned to his apartment. She said George contacted family members in a state of panic after being repeatedly struck and began making arrangements to fly back to Britain with assistance from friends.
According to Stirling, George returned to the apartment only because she needed to retrieve her passport before leaving the country.
Upon arriving, George allegedly found her belongings scattered throughout the apartment. Stirling claims she was crying and pleading for the return of her passport when another confrontation occurred.
“She was crying and begging for her passport’s return when she was punched hard in the face and attacked,” Stirling said.
The activist further stated that George feared for her life during the altercation. According to her account, George grabbed a kitchen knife that was within reach and stabbed Treeby while attempting to defend herself.
Authorities arrested George at Dubai International Airport on June 22 as she was preparing to board a flight back to the United Kingdom. She was subsequently charged with murder and remains in custody at Bur Dubai jail while the legal proceedings continue.
If convicted, George could face severe penalties under UAE law. Advocacy groups have expressed concern about the potential consequences and are calling for a full examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Stirling has publicly voiced fears about the case, citing previous experiences involving defendants in the UAE justice system.
“I was the last person to speak to a man in the UAE before he was executed by firing squad,” she wrote on social media. “We spoke just 30 minutes before he was killed. I have never forgotten that conversation or the unfair justice system that killed him. That is why Brooke George’s case terrifies me.”
Meanwhile, George’s mother, Thereza George, says she noticed a significant change in her daughter after the second trip to Dubai began.
“The dynamic between them had clearly changed,” she said while discussing the relationship between her daughter and Treeby.
According to Thereza, Brooke appeared withdrawn and unhappy during conversations shortly before the incident. She said her daughter did not reveal exactly what was wrong but seemed unlike her usual cheerful self.
The most alarming conversation came after the fatal confrontation.
“When I spoke to Brooke right after the incident, she was absolutely terrified,” Thereza said. “I have never seen my daughter so frightened in my life. She was crying uncontrollably. I could see that one of her eyes was badly swollen and was beginning to close.”
She added that she believes her daughter was desperately trying to leave Dubai and escape a situation that had become increasingly frightening.
As the investigation continues, Detained in Dubai says it will advocate for George’s legal rights and push for a thorough examination of all evidence.
Stirling has also urged authorities to analyze electronic devices, online communications, and digital records connected to Treeby. She claims George reported seeing disturbing material on his computer before the incident and believes investigators should determine whether any additional criminal activity may have been involved.
At this stage, the allegations made by George, her family, and advocacy groups remain claims that have not been proven in court. UAE authorities have not publicly confirmed the details of the alleged assault or George’s self-defense account.
The case is expected to draw continued international attention as legal proceedings move forward and investigators work to determine exactly what happened inside the Dubai apartment on the day of Treeby’s death.
