    The heat on Interstate 40 that afternoon felt relentless—the kind that settles into your chest and slowly drains your energy.

    My sister Lily and I were traveling west, windows down, the air conditioner long gone. These road trips had become our quiet way of moving forward, especially after the accident that changed her life three years earlier.

    Lily uses a wheelchair. She’s strong, patient, and far more resilient than most people ever take the time to notice.

    We pulled into a small gas station just outside Amarillo.
