Sir Tom Jones to Air Special BBC Radio 2 Performance This Weekend
Legendary Welsh singer Sir Tom Jones is set to treat fans to a special performance for BBC Radio 2, airing this weekend as part of the broadcaster’s Live at Home festival.
The iconic vocalist, who celebrated his 80th birthday in June, recorded the intimate set two weeks ago in a walled garden in Hertfordshire. Due to pandemic restrictions, the performance took place without a live audience, with only Radio 2 presenters Trevor Nelson and Jo Whiley, along with a small production crew, in attendance.
Despite the unusual setting, Jones reportedly sounded as strong as ever. Trevor Nelson described the experience as a privilege, saying:
“He was incredible. Just celebrated his 80th birthday and his voice was still great, so I felt really, really privileged.”
The pre-recorded concert will feature a selection of Jones’ greatest hits and will be available to watch and listen to via BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds starting September 12.
Earlier this week, Jones teased the appearance on Instagram, sharing photos from the shoot alongside a simple caption: “Coming tomorrow…” He had previously told followers:
“It was a pleasure to have been able to record a very special set with my band for @bbcradio2 Live at Home event recently.”
Fans were quick to react with excitement, flooding the comments with messages like “Cannot wait,” “Looking fabulous Sir Tom,” and “Fantastic—really looking forward to it.”
Sir Tom joins an impressive Live at Home lineup that includes The Killers, Craig David, Sheryl Crow, The Pretenders, Erasure, and McFly. The festival will be broadcast throughout the weekend on BBC Radio 2, with television highlights airing on BBC Two.
Even without an audience, it’s clear that Sir Tom Jones continues to prove that age has done nothing to dim his legendary voice.
