Viewers Accuse the CMA Awards of Being “Rigged” After Morgan Wallen’s Shutout
Some viewers were not happy with this year’s Country Music Association Awards.
On Wednesday, November 19, the 59th Annual CMA Awards took place at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, with Lainey Wilson serving as solo host. The singer-songwriter, 33, delivered multiple high-energy performances throughout the night and ultimately walked away with three of the show’s biggest trophies: Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Album of the Year for her 2024 project Whirlwind.
But while Wilson dominated the evening, a large number of viewers were furious that Morgan Wallen — one of country music’s top-selling and most consistently streamed artists — went home empty-handed.
Wallen, 32, was nominated for Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, but did not attend the show. This marks the second year in a row he was absent for nominations in major categories.
Fan Backlash Erupts Online
Immediately after the broadcast ended, fans flooded X (formerly Twitter) with accusations that the CMA Awards were “rigged,” claiming Wallen’s commercial success should have secured wins.
One viewer wrote:
“@MorganWallen should’ve swept last nights awards! 1.7 million albums sold and a packed out ‘I’m the Problem’ tour! You can’t convince me CMA isn’t rigged.”
Another posted:
“We should just call it the Lainey Wilson show… CMA awards is so rigged.”
A third added:
“Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs got cheated out of the CMA award show last night. Same thing they did to Toby Keith.”
Many argued that Wilson’s position as host combined with her multiple wins felt suspicious, especially considering Wallen’s massive year in streaming, radio, and ticket sales.
Lainey Responds With Gratitude — Not Controversy
Despite the online uproar, Wilson kept her acceptance speech focused on gratitude — thanking her family, her fans, and her faith.
“I was just so tickled to be here hosting this thing tonight,” she said. “I just came into here wanting to celebrate country music.”
She did not address the backlash directly, but fans inside the arena reported she received a loud standing ovation after winning Entertainer of the Year.

While the CMA Awards are no stranger to passionate debates, this year sparked particularly intense reactions — largely due to Wallen’s ongoing dominance in sales and streaming, paired with his continued absence from the ceremony.
