Home » “I Didn’t Expect This… I Couldn’t Even Sing…” The entire arena froze as Blake Shelton did something nobody saw coming—he dropped every wall, every layer of celebrity, and let his heart break right there under a lonely spotlight. With only an acoustic guitar trembling in his hands, Blake stepped forward and whispered, “This one… this one still hurts.” Then he began “She Talks to Angels”—and the very first note felt like a wound reopening. There were no screens, no booming lights, no distractions. Just Blake. Just the pain. Just the truth.

Blake Shelton’s Raw 2008 Cover of “She Talks to Angels” Remains a Hidden Gem

Before he was The Voice coach, TV star, or household name, Blake Shelton was just a hungry country singer with a guitar and a lot of soul. Back in 2008, Shelton delivered a stripped-down, emotionally charged version of The Black Crowes’ rock classic “She Talks to Angels.”

At the time, Shelton was still in his early rise — his hair only recently short after the mullet years, his career gaining steam in mainstream country, and his performances marked by grit and heart rather than glitz.

    Revisiting a Forgotten Performance

Originally released in 1990 on Shake Your Money Maker, “She Talks to Angels” became one of the defining songs of the ‘90s rock era. Blake’s version, however, traded the swagger for sincerity — turning the song into a haunting country confession.

There’s no auto-tune, no big production — just Blake’s voice, a guitar, and pure emotion. It’s the kind of raw performance fans have been asking for more of ever since.

    As one fan put it:

“Can we please get this version of Blake back? Hell, bring back the mullet too while you’re at it.”

No one’s quite sure where the original video came from, but its reappearance online has reignited appreciation for the old-school Shelton — before fame and television, when the Oklahoma native sang like he was bleeding into every note.

Tennessee Jet’s Country Take on the Same Classic

While Shelton’s cover has become a fan favorite, he’s not the only country artist to reimagine “She Talks to Angels.”

Tennessee Jet, best known for his work writing songs for Cody Jinks, also tackled the Black Crowes classic on his 2020 album The Country — and absolutely nailed it.

The album itself is a rootsy, authentic blend of outlaw country and rock, featuring collaborations with Cody Jinks, Paul Cauthen, Elizabeth Cook, and Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson’s longtime harmonica player), plus Brian Newman, Lady Gaga’s trumpet player.

Tennessee Jet’s rendition of “She Talks to Angels” strips away the radio gloss, replacing it with grit, smoke, and southern soul — the kind of version that would make Chris Robinson proud.

    Two Artists, One Timeless Song

More than three decades after its release, “She Talks to Angels” continues to inspire country artists across generations.

Blake Shelton brought raw, heartfelt simplicity.

Tennessee Jet brought the dusty road and whiskey-tinged soul.

Both prove one thing — a great song never dies. It just finds new voices to tell its story.
