Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter: A Friendship Built on Music and Mutual Respect

Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter share a bond that runs deep — one built on creative chemistry, trust, and genuine friendship, not romance.

In his newly released memoir Heart Life Music (November 4), Chesney, 57, opened up about their connection and the story behind their iconic 2010 duet, “You and Tequila.”

The Making of “You and Tequila”

Chesney recalled how he first reached out to Potter after hearing her live album and feeling an instant connection to her voice. “I looked up at the sky and exhaled,” he wrote. “I knew we were aligned. She sounded like coming home.”

When they entered the studio, the magic happened quickly — Potter nailed her vocals in just two or three takes. “We’d talked longer than she was in the vocal booth,” Chesney said. “Even before it was mixed, we knew it was something special. That’s the thing: you know.”

The song, which later appeared on Chesney’s Hemingway’s Whiskey album, became one of his most celebrated collaborations, earning widespread acclaim for its haunting beauty and raw emotion.

    Filming the Music Video

The pair spent two days shooting the “You and Tequila” video in Malibu — an experience that deepened their friendship but also fueled public speculation.

“We spent two days in Malibu, rolling around the canyons, seeing the cliffs and the ocean, drinking tequila and talking about life, love, what you dream and how hard it can be getting there,” Chesney wrote.

He admitted that the video’s intimacy led many — including his own mother — to believe they were romantically involved. “Anyone who’s ever seen that video assumes we were having sex,” he said. “Even Mom thought we were sleeping together, but that wasn’t true. That chemistry comes from our gypsy souls, our desire to chase music where it takes us and disappear into places we can be still.”

    A Friendship That Transcends

Since their collaboration, Chesney and Potter’s friendship has only grown stronger. He described her as a confidante and source of unwavering support.

“Grace and I have told each other our deepest secrets, talked each other through tough stuff, and tried to show up for the other,” Chesney wrote. “I’ve told her things I wouldn’t tell anyone else, because rather than judge or say, ‘How did you let that happen?’ she asks, ‘How can I help?’”

He also reflected on moments when he silently worried for her, particularly when she married her now ex-husband, Matt Burr. “I could see two great people who probably weren’t meant to be together forever,” he admitted. “I couldn’t quite tell her, but Grace swears she knew without me saying a word. We drank a few bottles of really good red wine, had a rager, saw the sun come up, and I got back to the tour.”

    A Lasting Connection

Chesney summed up their bond beautifully in his memoir: “That heart that Grace brings to everything she does was a skeleton key in my world. Any time she takes a stage with us, people are transfixed.”

Their friendship, rooted in honesty, artistry, and mutual respect, continues to inspire both of them — proof that sometimes, the deepest connections have nothing to do with romance and everything to do with shared soul and song.
