Lauren Alaina Opens Up About Her Father’s Struggles and Legacy

Lauren Alaina shared an emotional message with fans, reflecting on the loss of her father, J.J. Suddeth, on what would have been his 13th year of sobriety. In a tearful video, the country star revealed that while it was incredibly difficult for her to speak about, she felt it was important to honor her dad’s memory and be transparent about his struggles.

“Today would’ve been his 13th year of sobriety if he had made it,” Alaina said through tears. “He passed away a little over a year ago, but he didn’t make it to his 12th year either, and I’m not even sure about his 11th. He relapsed, and it’s a major contributing factor to why he’s no longer here with us.”

Suddeth tragically passed away in July 2024, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence his daughter’s life and music.

    Turning Grief Into Hope

Carrying the weight of her father’s loss, Alaina used the video to speak directly to anyone battling similar demons, offering a message of compassion and support.

“If you’re struggling, there are so many people who love you,” she said earnestly. “Love yourself enough to get the help you need. Surround yourself with people who truly care about you.”

Fighting back tears, the “All My Exes” singer explained that she planned to spend the day going through her father’s belongings — choosing a few of his clothes to turn into a blanket for her daughter, Beni Doll, who will never get the chance to meet her grandfather. The rest, she shared, would be donated to a veterans organization in hopes of bringing warmth and healing to someone else in need.

A Message of Healing and Kindness

Before ending the video, Alaina offered one final piece of heartfelt advice to her followers:

“Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. Life is so short. Take care of yourselves. There are people who love you. Don’t ever forget that.”

In her caption, she revealed that this anniversary was even more painful than her father’s birthday or Father’s Day, as it served as a stark reminder of what could have been a milestone celebration.

    She wrote:

“Today I choose to honor him still. He was a proud father and pawpaw. A proud Army veteran. He was smart, kind, and the funniest person I’ve ever met. He always had an answer for everything. He is so missed. Love yourself and others. Prioritize your mental health. Surround yourself with people who help you heal. I so wish my dad had done this.”

Alaina also invited fans to share veterans organizations in the comments that could benefit from her father’s donated clothing, saying, “I know that would make him proud.”

The Country Community Shows Its Support

As with the day she first announced her father’s passing, Alaina was quickly surrounded by love and encouragement from friends and fellow artists across the country music world.

Jake Owen commented, “Amen. There’s plenty of love out here to comfort those that are lost. Proud of you, Lauren. ♥️”

Kylie Morgan promised to “say a prayer for you baby doll ❤️ love you.”

Chase Matthew, her duet partner, added, “I admire your strength, love you Lauren ❤️,” while Carly Pearce wrote, “Love you, Lauren ❤️,” and Tigirlily Gold sent, “Big hugs 💛💛💛💛💛.”

    Remembering J.J. Suddeth’s Influence

Alaina first shared the heartbreaking news of her father’s death on July 24, 2024, telling fans she would be taking time away from touring to be with family.

“We lost my daddy last night, and I really have no words yet,” she wrote on Instagram. “I am going home to be with my family. Thank you for your prayers and understanding.”

Though their relationship had ups and downs over the years, Lauren and her father became especially close in the time leading up to his passing. His life and lessons inspired several of her most personal songs, including “Doin’ Fine,” “My Old Man,” and “Little Things.”

He was there to see her walk down the aisle — a moment that became one of their last memories together — though heartbreakingly, he never got to meet his granddaughter.

Still, Lauren Alaina continues to find ways to honor his memory through her music and family, keeping his spirit alive in the melodies and stories that shaped who she is today.
