Put salt in your toilet. Here’s why. – Wake Up Your Mind

Want a cleaner, fresher toilet without harsh chemicals? Grab the salt shaker.

Salt’s coarse crystals act like a gentle scouring agent in the bowl: they help loosen grime, encourage toilet paper to break down more easily, and naturally absorb moisture and odors. It’s not a plumber-in-a-box, but as routine maintenance it can keep small issues from becoming big, gross ones.

    How to use it

    1. Pour about 1 cup of coarse salt (rock, kosher, or sea salt) into the bowl.

    2. Let it sit—overnight is ideal so the crystals can work.

    3. Scrub with a toilet brush.

    4. Flush. Done.

Do this every few weeks for simple, low-cost upkeep.

    Why it works

    • Mild abrasion: Crystals help dislodge mineral staining and buildup.

    • Deodorizing: Salt draws moisture and helps neutralize smells.

    • Paper breakup: Agitation + time encourages toilet paper to disperse.

    Smart tips

    • Stick to the bowl only—don’t add salt to the tank (it can be hard on metal parts).

    • For extra oomph, add ½ cup of baking soda with the salt before the overnight sit.

    • If you have a septic system, use sparingly; frequent large doses of salt aren’t great for beneficial bacteria.

    • Salt won’t fix serious blockages. For slow drains or clogs, use a plunger or toilet auger; call a pro if needed.

Cheap, eco-friendlier than many cleaners, and easy to do—salt is a handy little hack for keeping the throne in fighting shape.
