Fans in Tears as Robert Irwin Honors Late Father Steve During Dancing With The Stars US Debut

Robert Irwin brought both energy and emotion to the Dancing With The Stars US stage this week, stunning audiences with his first-ever performance and delivering a subtle yet powerful tribute to his late father, wildlife legend Steve Irwin.

    A Dance Full of Surprises

The 21-year-old Australian conservationist performed a spirited jive to “Born to Be Wild” alongside pro partner Witney Carson. The routine was packed with flips, leaps, and energy, but one blink-and-you’ll-miss-it move stole the spotlight.

Midway through, Robert soared cleanly over Witney’s head before triumphantly raising both fists toward the camera — the same iconic gesture Steve Irwin made famous during his lifetime.

The tribute didn’t go unnoticed. A fan quickly paired Robert’s pose with a photo of Steve doing the same move, posting it to TikTok with the caption: “Not Robert Irwin honouring his dad’s iconic pose week 1 on DWTS [crying emoji].”

Fans — and Celebrities — React

The emotional Easter egg sent fans into meltdown online.

“I was hysterically crying,” wrote reality star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi.

“Goosebumps every time,” added another viewer.

“Steve would be so proud of his babies,” one comment read.

Others called it “instant chills” and a moment that showed just how deeply Robert still carries his father’s legacy.

    More Homages to Australia Zoo

The tribute didn’t stop there. The performance opened with Robert crouched atop a jeep in his trademark khaki uniform, binoculars in hand as howler monkey calls echoed through the arena. Moments later, he tore off the khakis to reveal a tropical shirt and launched into the jive.

Behind him, projections of Uluru added another nod to his Australian roots and the Irwin family’s home at Australia Zoo.

    Family Support Front and Center

Robert’s family was front row for the milestone night. His mother Terri, sister Bindi, and brother-in-law Chandler Powell leapt to their feet as the routine reached its climax. At one point, Robert ran over to hug Bindi mid-show, earning another wave of cheers from the crowd.

    Judges’ Reactions

The debut scored 15 out of 20 — but perhaps more importantly, high praise from the judges.

Bruno Tonioli teased before delivering his verdict: “That wasn’t good… it was great, absolutely brilliant,” giving Robert and Witney 7 points.

Derek Hough, who famously partnered with Bindi Irwin when she competed in 2015, awarded the pair 8 points: “You had some big shoes to fill with Bindi. You owned those shoes, my friend. That was probably the best first dance I have ever seen on this show.”

    Humble as Ever

Despite the roaring reception, Robert stayed modest, praising Witney Carson for her guidance. “I haven’t moved to music in my entire life,” he admitted, still catching his breath.

With his heartfelt tribute and an already viral debut, many fans are predicting Robert could go all the way this season. But win or lose, one thing is clear: Steve Irwin’s legacy lives on — not only through wildlife conservation but now, through dance.
