The Song That Nearly Divided Dolly and Carl Until She Reclaimed It with a Gospel Twist and Rock Redemption

Dolly Parton has always followed her gut. Whether it was turning down Elvis Presley’s request to record I Will Always Love You, launching Dollywood, or diving into rock music at age 77, she’s never let hesitation stop her. But even a fearless icon like Dolly has a few voices she listens to.

One of those is Carl Dean—her husband of nearly six decades. While he rarely comments on her music, there was one song he urged her not to touch: Stairway to Heaven.

And of course, Dolly did it anyway.

    Carl Dean’s Warning
Carl may be married to one of country music’s biggest legends, but he’s never been a fan of the genre. Dolly has even joked it’s his least favorite. His taste leans rock, which made it all the more surprising when he told her not to cover Stairway to Heaven back in 2002.

“He said, ‘I don’t think you should do that,’ and I said, ‘Why?’” Dolly recalled during promotion for her 2023 rock album Rockstar. “And he said, ‘Because it’s a legend. It’s a classic.’”

To Carl, Stairway to Heaven was sacred. He worried that reimagining it might upset the song’s devoted fans. And in his trademark deadpan way, he added, “Are you sure that’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ or stairwell to hell?”

But Dolly had already made up her mind. Rather than recreate the song exactly, she gave it a bluegrass twist with gospel undertones—rooted in her own musical heritage.

Carl wasn’t sold. After hearing the final track, all he said was, “It’s okay”—as close to a compliment as he got. But Dolly didn’t let that stop her.

A New Version, A New Reaction
Fast forward twenty years, and Dolly once again felt the pull of Stairway to Heaven. This time, though, she wasn’t just tackling one rock song—she was doing a full-on rock album. Rockstar, released in 2023, was her way of proving she belonged in the genre after her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Unlike her earlier rendition, Dolly stuck closer to Led Zeppelin’s original this time. She wanted to show the world—and Carl—that she could honor the song in its truest form.

And Carl? He finally came around.

“He loved the new version because I stayed true to it,” Dolly said.

It was a rare change of heart from the man who had once urged her to steer clear. But Dolly’s instinct, as always, proved right. And if her career has taught us anything, it’s that trusting herself—especially when it’s risky—is exactly what makes Dolly Parton who she is.

Now it’s your turn to judge: did Dolly finally nail Stairway to Heaven, just like Carl thought she did?

It wasn’t just a performance — it was a rebellion in rhinestones, proving that even on the world’s most refined stage, there’s still room for rock
