Jennifer Grey was already one of Hollywood’s most recognizable young actresses when she made a decision she believed might open more doors in her career. Instead, the Dirty Dancing star says undergoing two nose surgeries dramatically changed her appearance, leaving her struggling with her identity and feeling almost invisible in an industry that once immediately recognized her.
Grey, now 66, became an international star playing Frances “Baby” Houseman opposite Patrick Swayze in the 1987 romantic classic Dirty Dancing. The movie became a cultural phenomenon, and Grey’s distinctive appearance was inseparable from the character audiences loved.
But after the film’s enormous success, Grey says she repeatedly encountered comments suggesting that her appearance — particularly her nose — could limit the roles available to her.
In her 2022 memoir, Out of the Corner, Grey reflected on the pressure she experienced and how something she had never personally considered a flaw gradually became impossible to ignore.
One particularly uncomfortable moment reportedly came during an encounter with a plastic surgeon who had watched Dirty Dancing. According to Grey, the surgeon questioned why she had not already had her nose altered.
Until then, Grey hadn’t viewed her nose as something that needed fixing. But repeated messages from people around her eventually began changing the way she saw herself.
