American Idol Unveils Top 7 During “Judges’ Song Contest Night”
The competition intensified on American Idol Monday night (May 5) as fan favorites Breanna Nix and Mattie Pruitt vied for a spot in the Top 7. Themed “Judges’ Song Contest Night,” the episode gave each contestant a list of three songs—each picked by one of the judges—without revealing which judge chose which song until after the performance.
The judge whose songs were selected the most earned bragging rights, as well as the power to choose one wildcard contestant to save at the night’s end. This time, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie tied for most picks, so they made the final decision together.
Who Made It Into the Top 7?
America’s vote secured six contestants right away:
Slater Nalley
John Foster
Jamal Roberts
Thunderstorm Artis
Gabby Samone
Breanna Nix
That left Mattie Pruitt and Josh King in danger. After a brief deliberation, Luke and Lionel chose to save Mattie as the judges’ wildcard pick—sending Josh King home.
A Powerful Carrie Underwood Tribute Leaves Everyone Emotional
Before the results were announced, the Top 8 contestants teamed up for group performances honoring the judges. Highlights included:
Slater, John, and Thunderstorm performing Luke Bryan’s “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day”
Gabby, Jamal, and Josh singing Lionel Richie’s “Dancing on the Ceiling”
But the night’s most moving performance came from Breanna Nix and Mattie Pruitt, who joined forces to honor Carrie Underwood with a stunning rendition of her faith-filled ballad, “Something in the Water.”
Each took turns delivering powerful solos and then blended their voices in perfect harmony. The performance was so moving that Carrie Underwood, visibly emotional, teared up.
“That was really wonderful … it was just beautiful, and I feel very honored right now, so thank you,” Carrie told them, her voice filled with gratitude.
A Sisterly Bond on Stage
Jelly Roll, Idol’s artist-in-residence, praised the duo’s chemistry, saying the performance felt like “watching a little sister and big sister have fun and share a song they love.” Their performance struck a chord with both the live audience and viewers at home.
Breanna and Mattie’s heartfelt duet not only captured the spirit of Carrie’s message—it also cemented their place as rising stars in this season’s American Idol journey.
