Jelly Roll and Brandon Lake Bring Powerful Faith-Filled Duet to American Idol’s Easter Special

In a historic first for American Idol, this season’s Easter Sunday episode (April 20) featured an all-gospel special titled Songs of Faith—a full three hours dedicated to uplifting, spiritual music performed by both contestants and special guests. The episode also marked the first time this season that judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan took the stage, alongside artist-in-residence Jelly Roll.

    A Heavenly Collaboration
One of the most anticipated performances of the night came when Jelly Roll teamed up with Grammy-winning worship artist Brandon Lake to perform their duet “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” The stirring song, which they first debuted at the Grand Ole Opry in February, received its national television premiere during the special.

Before that Opry performance, Lake shared why Jelly Roll was the perfect partner for the track:

“I wanted to sing this song with someone who had truly lived a hard-fought story—and the first person that came to mind was Jelly.”

When they connected, Lake learned that Jelly Roll was already listening to “Hard Fought Hallelujah” on repeat.

“I’m honored that I got the call,” Jelly Roll said. “I’m a Brandon Lake fan. What he’s doing for Christian music—and even outside of it—is something I haven’t seen in a long time.”

    Viewers Respond With Praise
Their emotionally charged performance on Idol earned praise across social media. Viewers were moved not only by the duo’s vocal power but by their bold proclamation of faith on a major TV platform.

“So awesome to see people praising Jesus on regular TV!” one viewer commented.
Another added, “Brandon Lake, thank you for boldly praising the Lord. Your voice is beautiful, and your heart is sincere.”

Others pointed out the visible joy in Jelly Roll’s face, calling their performance “a match made in heaven.”

A Night of Faith and High Stakes
The Songs of Faith episode also brought tension, as 24 contestants entered the night—but only 20 got to perform. Four were cut before the show began, and the remaining hopefuls each delivered a song rooted in faith or their personal journey, all hoping to earn America’s vote.

With six more contestants set to be eliminated the following night (April 21), the road to the title is narrowing fast.

But on Easter Sunday, it wasn’t about the competition—it was about the message. And Jelly Roll and Brandon Lake’s “Hard Fought Hallelujah” reminded everyone watching that redemption, hope, and grace can still take center stage in the spotlight.
