Louisiana’s John Foster Brings Down the House with “Callin’ Baton Rouge” on American Idol

Country music got its moment in the spotlight on Monday night’s American Idol, as Louisiana native John Foster delivered an electric performance of Garth Brooks’ classic Callin’ Baton Rouge during the second night of the Top 24 showcase at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii.

With the competition heating up in Season 23, Foster is holding strong as the last true country artist left in the running. After catching attention early on with Alan Jackson’s Don’t Rock The Jukebox, he was pushed by guest mentor Carrie Underwood to stretch himself vocally. Rising to the challenge, John followed up with Conway Twitty’s Goodbye Time, proving he had more to offer.

Though the judges were initially unsure if his style would hold up among powerhouse vocalists, Foster pushed through Hollywood Week, surviving two major cuts to secure a spot in the Top 24.

Backed by palm trees and a Hawaiian breeze, Foster’s latest performance was pure country fun. His lively rendition of Callin’ Baton Rouge had the crowd on their feet, and the judges were equally impressed.

“That was a Hawaiian hoedown,” Luke Bryan said with a grin. “It fit you perfectly. You’re a Louisiana boy singing a Louisiana song—and it showed. It was one of my favorite performances from you.”

Lionel Richie also applauded the performance, saying the song choice brought out Foster’s full energy and charm on stage.

With audience votes now deciding who advances to the Top 20, Foster’s blend of Southern charm and stage presence may just carry him further into the competition.

Watch his spirited performance of Callin’ Baton Rouge in the video below.
