Hollywood has lost a true icon.

Clive Revill, the original voice of Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, has passed away at the age of 94. His daughter, Kate Revill, confirmed that he died on March 11 at a care facility in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, after a long battle with dementia. Tributes from fans and colleagues have poured in following the news of his passing.

A Legacy in Film and Television
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1930, Revill enjoyed a distinguished career spanning over six decades. While his voice work as Emperor Palpatine in The Empire Strikes Back remains his most iconic role, Revill’s career extended far beyond the Star Wars universe. He appeared in notable films and television shows such as Transformers: The Movie (1986), Batman: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Twilight Zone, and Columbo. In 1973, he earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the comedy Avanti!, alongside Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills.

    Inspired by Legends
Revill’s journey into acting began in the early 1950s when he moved to London. There, he crossed paths with acting legends Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh during their New Zealand tour. Recognizing his potential, they encouraged him to study at the prestigious Old Vic Theatre School in England, setting him on the path to a remarkable career.

An Actor Who Left His Mark
Although Revill’s career spanned a wide range of roles, he will forever be remembered for his portrayal of the Emperor in The Empire Strikes Back. Speaking about his involvement in the film, Revill shared that director Irvin Kershner had asked him to provide a voice for the Emperor, who was only seen as a hologram. His approach was to deliver the voice with minimal emotion, which became iconic for fans.

Although his voice was later replaced by Ian McDiarmid in the 2004 DVD release, Revill’s original portrayal of the Emperor remains a beloved part of Star Wars history, and fans continue to celebrate his work at conventions.

    A Lasting Impact
Revill retired from acting after his final role in The Queen of Spain (2016), where he starred alongside Penélope Cruz. However, his influence and legacy will live on through the unforgettable characters he brought to life.

Clive Revill may be gone, but his contributions to film and television will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Clive Revill. Your voice and your legacy will remain etched in the hearts of fans and the history of cinema.
