On the morning of March 24, Dr. Gerhardt Konig and his wife, Arielle, were hiking the Pali Lookout trail in Oahu when a shocking and disturbing incident occurred. Authorities say that the 46-year-old husband allegedly attempted to push his wife off the trail and struck her in the head with a rock.

The situation quickly escalated into a manhunt that lasted over six hours. Police responded to 911 calls from two witnesses who reported seeing the assault at the Pali Puka hiking trail around 10:30 a.m. According to the authorities, the attack began after Arielle refused to take a picture with her husband. Sources also revealed that Gerhardt Konig attempted to harm her with two syringes.

Arielle sustained severe injuries to her face and head and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Dr. Konig has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, according to Honolulu police. His bail has been set at $5 million.

When asked about the incident, Konig’s attorney, Myles Breiner, said, “Why he did this? That’s a mystery… he has nothing on his record here or anywhere else he’s ever lived in. So it’s rather surprising that out of nowhere, he would engage in this kind of behavior.”

Konig was employed through an independent agency and worked at various medical facilities across Maui, including Maui Memorial Medical Center. However, he has now been suspended from his role at the medical center. Maui Health, the organization that oversees the hospital, issued a statement saying it takes concerns about safety seriously and will cooperate with authorities during the investigation.

The couple had married in 2018 and recently moved from Pennsylvania to a $1.5 million home in Maui. While those close to the Konigs are left stunned by the events, advocates for domestic violence victims express that such incidents should not be surprising. Sanoe Kaaihue, Executive Director of Women Helping Women, emphasized that domestic violence affects people from all walks of life, regardless of their success or profession.

Dr. Konig was previously married to Jessica Patella, a sex worker, before marrying Arielle. The couple had been together for over 15 years, raising two children during that time.

The situation continues to unfold, with authorities investigating the attack, and the community left shaken by the unexpected and tragic event.
