JD Vance’s rise to the White House is truly remarkable. The 40-year-old from Middletown, Ohio, gained significant attention when he published his memoir Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis in 2016.
After a career in the military and a brief stint as a venture capitalist, he is now the Vice President of the United States. However, despite his political success, Vance’s year began with some health challenges, including surgery in January.
Vance’s childhood was far from conventional. Growing up in Middletown, Ohio, with his half-sister Lindsay, Vance faced a turbulent home life. His mother struggled with drug addiction, and his parents divorced when he was young. Over time, his mother exhibited violent behavior.
In an NPR interview, Vance shared some of the difficult experiences from his youth, many of which are detailed in his 2016 memoir. One such experience involved his mother threatening to crash their car, endangering both him and his sister. Vance eventually sued his mother, and he and Lindsay were adopted by their grandparents. Although their lives weren’t easy, the siblings found comfort in each other.
When Lindsay eventually left home to start her own family, Vance struggled to find his own path. His sister, feeling guilty about leaving him behind, later cried after reading about it in his memoir. However, Vance has always assured her that he never blamed her.
Vance, unsure of his future, began hanging out with the wrong crowd and experimenting with drugs. His grandmother intervened, delivering a memorable ultimatum: either leave the bad influences behind or face the consequences. This tough love helped steer him in the right direction.
After graduating from Middletown High School in 2003, Vance enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he served as a combat correspondent in Iraq. His military service, while not involving direct combat, shaped his views on life and gave him valuable experiences, which he later shared in his memoir.
Although he hadn’t considered politics at the time, his military colleagues saw potential in him. Retired Major Shawn Haney, who served with Vance, was certain he would one day walk through the doors of the White House. “We all knew he would run for office,” Haney told CNN.
Vance’s time in Iraq and his service with the Marine Corps provided him with critical life lessons, and he often credited the military with helping him mature and overcome his struggles. His role in public affairs also highlighted his natural aptitude for media relations, a skill that would serve him well in the political arena.
After using the GI Bill to attend Ohio State University and later Yale Law School, Vance sought to share his story with Hillbilly Elegy, which became a bestseller and was later adapted into a Netflix film. The book’s success opened doors for Vance, including a job offer from AOL co-founder Steve Chase at his firm, Revolution. He later founded his own venture capital firm, Narya Ventures, in Cincinnati.
In 2018, Vance was considered for a US Senate seat but declined. Three years later, with Senator Rob Portman not seeking reelection, Vance entered the race. He won the Republican primary in May 2022 and defeated Tim Ryan in the November general election, officially becoming a Senator on January 3, 2023.
Vance’s relationship with Donald Trump has been complex. In the past, he criticized Trump and even called him a “moral disaster.” However, the two eventually found common ground, and Trump later selected Vance as his vice-presidential pick.
Since taking office, Vance has faced criticism, particularly after a heated confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. His actions and decisions over the next few years will certainly be watched closely.
Vance’s term as Vice President didn’t start smoothly, as he underwent minor sinus surgery in early January, just before his inauguration. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and Vance resumed his duties, becoming the youngest Vice President since Richard Nixon.
