After learning that her song “Super Freaky Girl” was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2023 Grammys, Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to criticize the ceremony.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the song was reclassified from rap to pop after being filed by Minaj to the Recording Academy’s rap committee.
Minaj reacted angrily to the decision on an Instagram Live that has since been added to her account. She said: “‘Super Freaky Girl,’ where I only rapped on the song, was removed from the rap categories at the Grammys and put in pop.”
She mentioned that “Hotline Bling” by Drake was named Best Rap Song and Best Rap Sung [Performance] at the 2016 awards, despite the fact that Drake had previously stated that the song did not belong in the rap genre. Drake had stated, “I’m a Black artist, I’m apparently a rapper, even though ‘Hotline Bling’ is not a rap song.”
“So, hypothetically speaking, ‘Super Freaky Girl’ is a pop song,” Minaj went on to remark. We can just state that. What exactly is the “Big Energy” that [Latto] refers to? … If you were to reclassify “Super Freaky Girl” from rap to pop, you would also need to reclassify “Big Energy” to pop. Incidentally, the producers for both songs are the same. Alright, then, let’s play fair. If I’m rapping on a pop song, I still manage to out-rap the artist.
