I was seventeen when my world seemed to collapse in a tiny clinic room.
I sat staring at a pregnancy test in my trembling hands.
Two pink lines.
I was still trying to understand who I was, and suddenly I was responsible for another life.
When I told my boyfriend, I expected fear. Confusion. Maybe even anger.
I did not expect him to look at me and say, “You’re just a mistake I made.”
Then came the words I would remember for decades.
“If you keep this kid, you’re on your own. Don’t expect a cent or a second of my life.”
Within days, he disappeared.
No calls. No messages. No attempt to ask how I was doing or what I planned to do.
For the rest of my pregnancy, I carried two things at once: my child and the certainty that I would have to face everything without his father.
My family helped where they could, but we were already struggling financially. At night, I would lie awake wondering how a seventeen-year-old with almost nothing could possibly give a baby the stability he deserved.
Then my son was born.
He was tiny and perfect.
I still remember his fingers curling around mine. His grip seemed impossibly strong for someone so small.
I loved him immediately.
And that made what came next even harder.
Two months later, I signed adoption papers.
I did not sign them because I wanted freedom from my son.
I signed because, at seventeen, frightened and without support from his father, I believed another family could give him what I could not.
I told myself that sometimes love meant accepting that wanting someone was not the same as being able to provide for them.
Then I walked out of the adoption office feeling as though I had left part of myself behind.
