Emily had spent months believing her marriage was quietly collapsing.
Her husband, Brad, had changed. He stayed at work later than usual, became distracted during conversations, and sometimes looked at her as though he wanted to say something but couldn’t find the courage. Whenever Emily asked what was wrong, Brad insisted he was simply tired.
Eventually, Emily began suspecting another woman.
Her name was Chloe, one of Brad’s coworkers. Emily had noticed her name appearing on his phone and had heard Brad mention her often enough to make her uncomfortable. When he suddenly stopped talking about Chloe altogether, Emily’s suspicions only became stronger.
Then, one afternoon, someone knocked on Emily’s front door.
